$4.00 a gallon!!!!!
Well, as I drove around Rochester today, I was shocked at how fast the price of gas is rising - about $0.10 a week. Then I got home, turned on the TV and there it was - the first story on the news - $4.00 a gallon in another week or so. This is crazy!!!!!! I’m a tad older than most college students so I remember filling up my dad’s car when I was in high school (early 1990’s) and you had to try real hard to fit $20 into the tank. Today, I filled up my econo-box car and it cost $50. I can only imagine what it costs to fill up a gas guzzling SUV. I’ll be interested to see just what the “tipping” price will be when it no longer becomes economical to drive - get out your bicycle’s everyone. I’ve been looking forward to the day I graduate from college so that I can buy a new car - nothing fancy but I love to drive fast so I was looking at a Subaru WRX STI or VW R32 or something like that - a nice quick car - but now it looks like a Prius will be on the agenda. That sucks!

It isn’t just that the price is going up—It’s the idea that they can raise prices daily and continue to report that they experience record profits. Over the weekend my wife and I went out in her car and she wanted to fill up but instead told me to stop at $40.I had to ask twice because “stop at $40” just didn’t register. As another older student, I remember being almost out of gas and throwing $5 in just to get by for a few days now I would be lucky to make it home if $5 was all I added.
To make matters worse it isn’t like we have many options. I am not going to start taking the bus from Chili to school just to save $50 per week and as the summer is coming I don’t plan on just sitting home to keep the tank full. Luckily my summer classes will be online so I will have some gas money saved to get me started in the fall semester.
I don’t care how expensive it gets… there is no Prius in my future!
I have a car and it still takes me a solid $40 or $50 to fill my tank. Being a college student, that’s a lot of my hard earned money that I’m losing. I’ve even had to cut my hours at work on the weekend because I was losing money because of the gas. I had to refill every Sunday night after working a 3 or 4 day weekend. I wish there was a student discount for gas. That would be amazing.
By the time you read this, I’m sure that the price will be higher but I just saw a gas station in Canadaigua that had Premium gas for $4.03. When I got home, I turned on the local news and they actually did a story on this - the first gas station in our area to break the $4 mark. I’m already sick of talking about the high price of gas and food. It’s like talking about the state of politics. Same story - Different day. And there’s not much we can do about it - We have to eat, we have to drive to school and work and we should vote, even if the candidates are not exactly what we envision as the best possible pick.
Yes, the price of gas is insane! There has been talk among our politicians of eliminating or reducing the taxes on gas, but will that make much of a difference? Knowing our oil companies, they would see it as an invitation to raise prices even higher. I mean, in their minds, they assume we are used to paying for it anyway, so if the price goes down from fewer taxes, might as well bring it back up to what it was before and make more money.
And to Robert Barlow… If you can get a Prius, go for it! When I bought my car this past year, I considered it. But, it was still a bit out of my price range. Maybe when I graduate in a few years I’ll be able to make that adjustment.
pretty soon a vacation is going to be being able to drive to the city with the way gas prices are going.
Will I gain the trust of students if I can obtain a student discount for gas? I’ll start working on it. My website is specifically targeted to offer students discounts at no charge.
Please visit www.UofSS.com. There’s a way to make easy money too, which can cover your rising gas expenses (which we all know is completely out of control).
Provide me some feedback - also, please let me know which gas stations students use the most. Do you normally fill up at a station close to school?
