Not your average winter break

Winter break is a time students look forward to for complete relaxation. Students leave their finals in December with plans ahead of them to do absolutely nothing for the next month and a half. Joe Malach and Emmett Henry, seniors at SUNY Geneseo, had a different plan in mind.

On Dec. 27, they left with a group of students to travel to Nicaragua, the second poorest country in Latin America, for three weeks. Their time there was spent teaching classes to young adults. They also created a morning recreation program for the children in the area.

The sand crunches between your toes as the sun beats on your unseasonably pale skin. A light breeze brushes across your face and the rays of sunlight stream down onto your body. People will travel far distances for some quality beach time.

Grab a healthy snack instead

Bathing suit season is quickly approaching and, let’s face it, we all want to be ready. Changing your diet completely may be too hard of a task, but a simple change such as eating healthy snacks can make a huge difference. Instead of picking up a bag of chips or grabbing a bag of candy, here are some ideas to not only make you feel better about what you are eating but also get you prepared to fit into your suit.

o Spread peanut butter on some celery or apples.

o Eat a banana.

Get ready to rock climb

For the last 13 years, an indoor rock climbing facility has welcomed climbers of all skill levels from it’s location on University Avenue. Rock Ventures offers 44 ropes available for climbing, so there is usually plenty of room open for those interested in trying something new.

The rock climbing facility is host to birthday parties, team building activities and overnight lock-ins, all of which are very popular.

Gil Carr, the senior manager, says that Rock Ventures helps in “building communication skills and (helping people) work together.”

Review: Magnolia’s Deli and Café

Located on Park Avenue, is a casual and unique restaurant called Magnolia’s. The visible beer in the coolers, makes it a comfortable atmosphere, if you consider that customers can go grab one themselves, like they would if they were at home. With both indoor and outdoor seating, depending on the weather, Magnolia’s is a popular spot in this area.

Post-college survival tips

Graduation is over. Whether you have a job or not, you must start looking ahead and making plans. This may be a stressful time for thousands across the country who are in this exact position. What do you do now? There will be no more classes (unless you plan to attend grad school), there will be no more thirsty Thursdays and your academic schedule (class not until 3 p.m.) will no longer be planned around your social life. Geez. This whole scenario seems really awful. Based off of a blog, titled Graduating, Here are some survival tips that all graduates should consider.

A peek into Aaron's Alley

When first walking through the door, you feel as though you have walked through a time machine. You are no longer in 2008, you are slapped back to the 1960’s. With colorful clothes and items of the hippie-ish nature, a 1960’s fanatic would find their heaven. Aaron’s Alley has been open since 1994, supplying the Rochester area with eccentric items.

What they sell:

Party in the Park

The 12th year of the Party in the Park series in Rochester, kicked off Thursday, June 5. Free music and drinks will most likely be what draws young people to this event. Located in a parking lot on the corner of Court Street and Exchange Boulevard, a lineup of concerts has been planned at 5:30 p.m. for every Thursday, from June 5 through August 7. With a variety of different sounds and free concerts sponsored by Entercom radio stations, the Party in the Park series will hopefully keep Rochester grooving all summer long.

A taste of Poland

When debating food choices, it seems to be the same old pattern; fried food, pizza, sandwiches, Chinese, maybe a little sushi and after that the ideas may not reach much further. What about Polish food? Although it may not be the norm for many to have a Polish meal, Polska Chata, a restaurant in Irondequoit, offers a variety of Polish dishes and zupy (soup).

Described as “interesting and just brilliant,” by the senior associate director of the Career Center at the University of Rochester, Monica Patel lived up to these words. With a friendly smile and excited tone in her voice, Patel greeted me.

Staying on campus to take a summer class, Patel knew she wanted to find a summer job or internship that would help her gain experience toward her future career. As an ecology and evolutionary biology major, Patel has plans to work in health care.

East End Festival is a summer favorite

From the intersection of East Avenue and Alexander Street and beyond, the street is closed off and packed with people. There are voices and music echoing against the bars that primarily inhabit this area. This scene describes the East End Music Festival that occurs on a Friday of every month throughout the summer time. The very first festival was Friday, June 6.

A conversation with John Scofield

Legendary jazz guitarist John Scofield has played with musicians such as the innovative Miles Davis to contemporary torch-bearers Medeski Martin & Wood. His recorded work ranges from classical jazz to acidy experimentations, and he even recently recorded a Ray Charles tribute album.

Before his performance on Sunday, June 15, at the 2008 Rochester International Jazz Festival, which features more than 800 musicians performing in just over a week, we caught up with John Scofield and got to talk to him about the collaborative spirit of jazz.

Flying back through World War II

On Monday June 16, my life was in the hands of John Shuttleworth and Ray Fowler, the captains as well as pilots of the Liberty Belle, a B-17 restored aircraft from World War II.

Traveling across the country, making about 50 stops a year, this aircraft has made numerous appearances and touched the lives of those who have come in contact with it. After 15 years and 3 million dollars of restoration, the Liberty Belle is back in action and roaring to go.

Tailgate creates an interesting scene

Beer cans and red cups are scattered on the ground. Shouts and screams, as well as profanities, are carried through the air. Music blasts out of the cars packed into a parking lot. The smell of hamburgers from grills is so strong it makes your mouth water. This is not an uncommon scene. This is the tailgate area at Darien Lake Performing Arts Center.

Rochester Musicfest: Hip-hop meets R&B nostalgia

“Where are all your friends?” asked J.T. Taylor, lead singer of Kool & The Gang to the meager crowd that had gathered for their performance at the 14th Annual Musicfest.

I wondered the same thing, as my first visit to Rochester’s PAETEC Park revealed a venue seemingly ideal for a music festival; great acoustics, great view from virtually anywhere and Rhorbach’s on tap. Nevertheless the crowd that had gathered to “celebrate” (yes, pun intended, unfortunately) the occasion was a small one, albeit enthusiastic.

Make a purchase, help the world

Wooden masks and tapestries hang from the walls of a rather small store called One World Goods in Pittsford Plaza. The small size of this store, though, is not representative of its huge mission to help the world.

One World Goods strives to enhance the social and economic conditions of various artisans around the world. They create a marketplace for developing countries to sell their goods and also lend a hand in increasing awareness for issues such as global poverty and economic injustice.

For the love of the game

As a petite, attractive girl with short brown hair wearing a white, collared, button-down shirt, Liz Buckner, at least appearance-wise, seems far from a sports enthusiast. But if you were to classify her just by her sophisticated style, then you would be very wrong.

A student at the University of Rochester, Buckner first thought she wanted to go into medicine. But soon she realized that her career would take her in a very different direction.

In high school Buckner suffered from a few knee injuries and because of this, she could no longer play sports.
