The College at Brockport, State University New York
Located in the canal town of Brockport, 16 miles west of Rochester,Brockport has been part of the SUNY system since its establishment in1948. However, the college itself was actually founded in 1835 as the Brockport Collegiate Institute to train teachers to work in New York state schools. Today there are more than 6,900 students enrolled in Brockport’s 42 undergraduate programs.

Hartwell Hall is the oldest building on the SUNY Brockport campus.Throughout the years students, faculty and staff have claimed thebuilding is haunted. Members of the cleaning staff have said theyexperience “things” when they’re alone in the building at night. Somehave seen a white figure—most likely a woman—wandering the halls atnight. Others have experienced the “changing of classes”—doors openingand closing and faint laughter and voices echoing from the classroomson the upper floors, supposedly from spirits changing classes.
One staff member swears she was touched on the shoulder whilecleaning a classroom, only to turn around and find no one. She alsosays that while cleaning one of the ballet rooms, she slipped from herstepladder, fell backward and was caught by an unknown force, which sether down gently, unharmed.
But, it isn’t limited to just the upper floors. The empty pool inthe basement has been the source of some unusual activity. People haveclaimed to hear splashing from the depths of the pool, but there’s nowater anywhere in sight! – Story by Alicia Sheppard
