SUNY Brockport Men's Basketball looks forward to upcoming season
The SUNY Brockport Men’s basketball team takes to the court to open up their 2008-2009 season this Saturday in the Johns Hopkins tournament against Whitworth University. Last year the Golden Eagles went 21-8 overall and 14-2 in SUNYAC conference play and just missed the NCAA tournament.
The team lost a lot from last season but star guard Shawn Harris wreturns. He played his high school ball right down the road at Gates-Chili. Junior forward Cantrel Harris, who started along-side Harris last season, will look to put the ball in the basket from down low. We recently talked with head coach Greg Dunne about this upcoming season:
What are the goals for your team this season? Our first goal is always to make the NCAA tournament and to win a national title. This year I also look forward to getting better everyday as a team.
Who do you look to as the leaders on your team this year? I look to our seniors. We have a lot of them who’ve won a lot of games over there career.We have a lot of seniors this year. This whole senior group has won a lot of games over there career. Mychal Wilkes is one of those great senior leaders. He scores a lot of points and leads by example.
What are your teams biggest strengths and weaknesses going into the season? Our biggest strength would be the fact that we have a lot of guys that can play. Our depth is outstanding this year. We’ll defend and play hard every night I think Our weakness will be finding a way to put the ball in the basket. We lost a lot last year down low.
Do you approach this season differently knowing that you’re going to be the head coach of the future? Absolutely not. I take my job day-by-day year-by-year. Last year was no different than this year, I expect the same out of myself.
Are there any incoming freshman that we should look out for this season? We have two freshman in Greg Schiefen and Gerald Williams who will give us some minutes.
What have you guys been doing in the off-season to prepare? Our guys worked very hard on their own this off-season and were dedicated in getting their own bodies into better shape. Our guys worked harder this off-season than ever before I think.
