Our resident coffee addict rates one of the city’s most popular cafes

Java’s Cafe on Gibbs Street seems to always be packed, no matter the time of day. During the day, music students from the nearby Eastman School stop by to recharge with a quick cup of coffee, and at night Java’s becomes one of the city’s most popular hangouts, with frequent live music performances.

It’s clear that people love Java’s, but how does it rank on the Loop scale? Let’s find out…

The buzz

Taste of house blend (5= yum, 1=yuck): 4

Noise level (5= deafening, 1=silent): 4. Okay to hold a conversation, but it’s not the best place to focus on an important paper.

Eye candy - baristas and customers (5=hot, 1=not): 4

Wireless: Free wifi daily from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M.

Cost of a small coffee: $1.50

Cost of a small latte: $3.00

The scene: Funky, definitely a hang-out vibe, whether you’re listening to live music or playing pool in the downstairs lounge.

Most requested specialty drink: Chocolate sitch (Espresso and chocolate blended with ice)

Parking: There’s no lot, so find a spot on the street or in the garage on the next block.
