More than just coffee, this South Wedge biz is cool and relaxed

Places like Boulder Coffee Co. are the reason I love Rochester. Maybe it’s the huge ceilings, or maybe it’s the comfy couches, or possibly just the spacious rooms that give Boulder a cool, homey vibe as soon as you enter the doors, but whatever it is, I love it.

Located in the South Wedge, the hip coffee house has more than just your typical café offerings. Boulder has delicious coffee, great food and local music almost every night of the week to help you unwind from a long day while having lots of fun, giving you one more reason to truly love this city.

The food …

It’s not just the atmosphere that makes Boulder different from other coffee places in town.

Boulder is known for its food and drink specialties. Salads, paninis and breakfast sandwiches named after Rochester neighborhoods grace the menu — try the Swillburg Club, the Mount Hope Mound or, of course, the South Wedge Veg.

And best yet, the meals won’t break the bank either — they typically run from $4.75 to $7.30.

And, of course, the coffee …

The menu features coffee, tea, espresso and popular coffee cocktails (coffee mixed with different liquors) that are tasty and cheap. A regular cup of coffee goes for $1.50, while the most expensive runs about $4. Frozen, hot, iced or blended, there’s definitely plenty to choose from.

Don’t like coffee?

Despite the name, Boulder Coffee Co. does not offer just coffee and great food. They have a huge selection of bottled beer, wine and liquor, making it not only a great place to hang out during the day, but also the night.

The music

Boulder Coffee Co. is has become known for its music scene, especially BoulderFest, a summer music festival featuring lots of local acts.

“We don’t feature any specific types of bands,” Gailit says. DJs, singer-songwriters and jazz trios have all taken the stage at Boulder.

But, it isn’t just music either. Sunday nights feature comedians, Wednesday nights are open mic nights, and poetry reading nights are soon to come.

What’s free for me?

There aren’t any free drinks or food, but there is free WiFi access. There is also a free desktop PC to use if you don’t feel like bringing your own computer.

The scene:

“A lot of people call [Boulder Coffee] homey,” says manager BrocGailit. “It’s like a third place. There’s home and work, and this is aplace to hang out.”

Boulder has such a nice atmosphere, in fact, that its regulars often have a hard time leaving.

“People come in to get a coffee and will stay for six hours hanging out,” says Gailit.

Two spacious rooms with plenty of tables, couches and chairs make upthe inside of the coffee shop. Outside, there is a deck with tables, plants and a fire pit — an ideal place to hang out with friends duringthe summer or winter (if you’re brave).

Most requested specialty drink: Non-alcoholic: Mocha. With alcohol: Caramel Chaos (Bailey’s, espresso, steamed milk, and whipped cream).

Parking: There’s a big lot in the back of Boulder and plenty of side streets within walking distance so you should be fine.
