Meet The Band: Zox
Traveling across a few states with freezing temperatures and a busted window (due to a run-in with a sticky-fingered bum) didn’t stop Zox from entertaining a crowd of fans Friday at RIT’s Ritz.
In a world of sound-the-same, pop/rock bands, it’s a rarity to come across a band with lyrical flair combined with a unique sound and style. Zox, a four-member group with a blend of diverse looks and sounds, creates a variety of music and a show like no other band.
Zox, originally from Providence, RI, was formed after a few of the band members met during college. They began touring in the nearby areas around their college forming a local fan base then began branching out to tour the country. The band has four members: singer/guitarist Eli Miller, bassist Dan Edinberg, drummer John Zox and violinist Spencer Swain. The addition of violin to their music gives Zox an edge not often heard in other bands.
Their music is a blend of a rock/reggae/pop sound with catchy lyrics and melodies. Their latest album and tour is the best music they have produced thus far according to band members Edinberg and Zox. They were able to do more on this album as far as sound goes including a robotic and futuristic sound on John Zox’s favorite song to perform, “Another Attack.”
Like their music, Friday’s show was energetic and unique. It included a mixture of old favorites as well as new music from their latest CD “Line in the Sand” which came out at the beginning of this year. The Zox following in Rochester is made possible by the internet and sites like MySpace which allow us all to hear their music before they are performing in front of us. The crowd of Zox loving, RIT students sang the lyrics to the songs they have heard on MySpace and have downloaded from the internet. The concert was intimate due to the venue allowing for fans to connect with the band. The down-to-earth members welcomed fans and autographs after the show with a sense of humor and appreciation for their fans.
The group will continue to tour through April into May across the United States. They’ll make their way back to this area on April 29, when they play a show at Club Infinity in Williamsville. After their US tour the band says they have plans to tour in Europe this summer to promote their album.
